Join local ecologist Ian James for an early morning tour on Okarito Lagoon. Ian, a ecologist, has a wealth of knowledge about New Zealand's environment and wildlife. His boat, "Explorer Douglas", is designed for quiet bird watching and photography.

Okarito Lagoon is New Zealand's largest unmodified estuary containing over 5000 hectares of waterways and wetlands with a magnificent backdrop of rainforests and mountains, including Mounts Cook and Tasman. The lagoon has over 70 bird species. It is the main feeding ground for white herons (kotuku) and adjoins the Okarito brown kiwi recovery area.

Directions: Look for the turn-off to Okarito 15 kms north of Franz Josef. All boat tours operate from the Okarito Nature Tours Office on the Strand.
